Progress and Challenges: My Student Teaching Journey Continues
Hello again, dear readers! It's time for another update on my student teaching adventure, and I must say that the last two days have been quite a rollercoaster ride. While yesterday was far from ideal, today brought both improvements and new challenges that have left me with a mix of emotions. Let's dive into the experiences of my classroom journey.
Yesterday's Setback and Today's Strides
To set the stage, let's rewind a bit. Yesterday was a particularly rough day in my student teaching journey. Today, on the other hand, held its own share of ups and downs, though it seemed like we were making progress in some areas. Overall, my classes were better behaved and more attentive, which was a promising sign.
Setting Clear Expectations
One of the first steps I took in today's classes was to lay out my expectations. I explained that from now until the end of my student teaching period, a new system would be in place to address behavior issues. It was essential for the students to understand how this system worked. After the first warning, a call home would be made. If the behavior persisted, it would result in lunch detention after the second warning. And for the third strike, the consequences would escalate to involve both a call home and a visit to the principal's office.
Drawing the Line: Unacceptable Behavior
While I strongly believe in giving students opportunities to learn and grow, there are lines that should never be crossed. Some behaviors demand immediate action without prior warnings. For instance, today a student used extremely inappropriate language towards me, and another physically put their hands on me. Such actions are absolutely unacceptable, and they warranted immediate intervention.
Balancing Emotions and Professionalism
The incident where a student put their hands on me triggered a fight-or-flight response within me. I had to maintain my composure while simultaneously dealing with panic. It was a daunting situation that made me acutely aware of the challenges and the need to navigate the emotional rollercoaster of teaching.
The Power of Support
In the midst of these trials and triumphs, I am incredibly fortunate to have a principal who supports me wholeheartedly. The unwavering encouragement of my teacher and the rest of the staff has been invaluable. Teaching is indeed a team effort, and I'm grateful to have a network of support during this journey.
As I look ahead, I'm prepared to face the ongoing challenges and continue working towards creating a respectful and productive learning environment. Stay tuned for more updates as my student teaching adventure unfolds, filled with its share of surprises, lessons, and, above all, growth.
