A Rollercoaster Day in Teaching: Facing Unforeseen Challenges
Hello, dear readers! Last week ended on a high note with successful lesson planning and a taste of what it's like to teach a class all on my own. I thought I was ready to tackle a full day of teaching starting today, but little did I know what lay ahead. If someone had told me about the events of today, I would have thought they were making it up. Yes, it was that challenging.
A Day That Defied Expectations
The day started with a jolt when a student, within the first five minutes of my 2/3 hour class, uttered a disrespectful phrase in front of the whole class. It was an unacceptable behavior, and she was swiftly removed from the classroom. I thought this might be the worst of it, but I soon realized that the day had more surprises in store for me.
The Afternoon: An Unraveling of Disruptive Behavior
The afternoon, during my 6/7 hour class, brought a new set of challenges. It escalated to a point where half of the class had to be removed to allow the other half to focus on the lesson. We didn't even get through the planned material as almost the entire class seemed to gang up on one student, making them cry and then ridiculing them for their tears. It was disheartening to witness such behavior, and it was clear that swift action was needed.
As I prepare to create an expectations PowerPoint for tomorrow, there's one thing that's clear: I will not tolerate bullying. It's essential to establish a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.
A Stand Against Unacceptable Behavior
During the day, there were instances of students refusing to follow directions, incessant talking to the point of yelling, racial slurs, and mocking a fellow student for crying. When I intervened and tried to maintain control, I was accused of racism. The students expressed their displeasure with my plans for teaching over the next five weeks and insisted that their disruptive behavior should be allowed to continue.
November's Challenge and Resolve
As I reflect on this challenging day, it's apparent that November might be a long month ahead. The unexpected events and the need to address issues of respect and bullying are teaching me valuable lessons not only as an educator but as a guide for these young minds. Teaching is more than just delivering lessons; it's about fostering an environment where every student feels safe, valued, and empowered.
With resolve and a commitment to promoting a positive classroom atmosphere, I look forward to facing whatever challenges November brings and helping my students learn not only the academic content but also the essential life skills of respect, kindness, and empathy.
Stay tuned for more updates on my teaching journey as I navigate these trials and triumphs along the way.
