Lessons in Flexibility: Embracing Change in the Classroom

A Whirlwind Wednesday: Triumphs, Surprises, and a Bittersweet Farewell Wednesdays in the world of teaching often have a way of feeling both long and short, challenging and rewarding. This particular Wednesday was no exception, as it brought a mix of triumphs, surprises, and a bittersweet realization about the limited time I have left with my high school students. Classroom Success: Listening, Discussions, and Assignments One of the day's highlights was the performance of my classes. They excelled in listening, engaged actively in discussions, and diligently completed their assignments. Their commitment to their education filled me with immense pride and optimism. Picture Day: A Lesson in Second-Grade Line Formation As fate would have it, Wednesday was also picture day at the school. I found myself leading my class down the hall in a perfectly aligned line, a sight that could easily have been mistaken for a group of second graders. To my pleasant surprise, my high school students embraced the task with grace and poise, reminding me of their adaptability. Ahead of Schedule: An Unexpected Blessing As I reviewed my lesson plans, I couldn't help but notice that we were ahead of schedule. While some might fret about being ahead, I welcomed the extra time. It offered us the opportunity to delve deeper into our topics and explore enriching activities. And, of course, I'm relieved to report that nothing caught on fire in the classroom. The Final Observation: A Class on Their Best Behavior During my seventh period, my university professor arrived for my last observation. She inquired if this class was my most challenging, and I replied with a smile, "Yes, and this is them on their best behavior." Her expression reflected a mix of surprise and understanding, recognizing the complexity of teaching. Passing Results: An Affirmation of Growth I received positive feedback from my professor, who commended my teaching and provided passing results for the observation. It served as a validation of my growth as a student teacher. However, our conversation took an unexpected turn when discussing my next placement. A Bittersweet Revelation: A Week Cut Short I had believed that I had three more weeks with my high school students, but my professor corrected me. My last day with this group would be on the 6th of October, not the 13th as I had thought. This revelation was bittersweet, as I had been looking forward to the extra time. An Alternative Farewell: Transitioning to Conferences In light of this change, my mentor teacher and I decided that although I wouldn't be present in the classroom during the final week, I would attend conferences. It was a way to provide closure and continue to support the students I had been with since day one. While not the ending I had envisioned, it felt fitting to bid farewell in this manner.
