Lessons and Nerves: A First Observation Experience

Facing the Anxiety: A Professor's Visit to My Classroom It's Wednesday, and the sun was shining through the classroom windows. But for me, it wasn't the brightness of the day that I noticed; it was the flutter of butterflies in my stomach. Why? Because today marked a significant moment in my journey as an aspiring educator – my professor was coming to observe my teaching. The Second-Hour Challenge: Ninth-Grade English As the clock struck the appointed hour, I stood before my second-hour class, a group of ninth-grade English students. It was a co-taught setting, adding an extra layer of complexity to the situation. The feeling of nervousness was overwhelming, but I reminded myself that all I could do was give it my best shot. Giving It My All As I led the class through the lesson, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. I watched their faces closely, trying to gauge their understanding and engagement. I encouraged them to expand their thinking, fostering an atmosphere where ideas flowed freely. Vocabulary words, some familiar and others not, found their place in the conversation. It was a dance of learning and interaction. The Post-Observation Meeting: A Heart in My Throat After the lesson concluded, it was time for the post-observation meeting with my professor. As I walked into her office, my heart felt like it was lodged firmly in my throat. I braced myself for constructive criticism and prepared to take notes on areas for improvement. A Shower of Praise: Surprising Feedback To my astonishment, my professor had nothing but praise. She commended the design of my presentation slides, emphasizing how they were both bright and engaging without overwhelming the students. She recognized the rapport I had built with the class in such a short time and applauded my efforts to push them to think critically and creatively. Her words of appreciation flowed, one after another. Embracing Positive Feedback: A Confidence Boost I could have listened to her positive feedback all day. It was a tremendous confidence boost for someone who had only been teaching for a week. Her encouragement reminded me of the power of dedication and the joy of witnessing students grow and learn. I realized that despite my initial anxiety, I was on the right path. Looking Ahead: A Nervous Promise As my professor shared her feedback, she reminded me that she would be observing my classes three more times over the next five weeks. While her words were reassuring, they didn't alleviate the nervousness that settled in my stomach. The truth is, every observation is an opportunity to grow, and the desire to excel in my chosen field keeps me on my toes.
